Writing Update

It's been a while since I posted anything here, but I figured I'd give a quick update. I am currently just over a third of the way through my first draft of a Coven of Cabaret. It's taking me way longer to get through this book than I had initially thought it would, and there a few reasons for that. The first is, of course, my baby is a toddler now and so writing during the day has taken a backseat to chasing her around. The other reasons are more to do with my writing. I feel like I have changed a bit as a writer since my first book, A Murder of Crowes, and it was hard to get back into the swing of things.

This isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's just different. For one, I've spent a year or more writing novels in the third person, so swapping back to first person takes some getting used to. For another, the other stories are written from a British perspective, with one being Victorian, and so the voice is so very different. Finally, Jack Crossmoor's books are just much more straightforward. These books avoid any sort of flowery prose or descriptions for the most part. They're about action and magic and one liner humor (or at least I want them to be) and I found it hard to switch gears.

That being said, I always feel the need to read things that inform what I am writing, and that is what I'm doing. I'm currently rereading the Alex Verus series by Benedict Jacka (an obvious inspiration for these books) and the Black Hat Series by Hailey Edwards (Great indie books, check them out on KU!) and I am loving it. It's helped me find my groove and I am hoping to make good time on the rest of this novel.

I am sure it will need another draft or two, but hopefully I avoided all the more novice pitfalls of the first and will not need to rewrite it so many times. Either way,  I am glad I am having fun with it again, and I hope to share it with readers soon!
